OUR GOALS:
- To
create a professional association that promotes the
social work profession among Nigerian
immigrants to the United States. To provide counseling,
advocacy, information, and other forms of assistance
to potential
and recent immigrants to fac
ilitate their
adjustment
to life in the United States and to enrich
the totality of their immigration experience.
- To work
with interested Nigerian immigrants towards self-determination
in making informed
decisions
that reduce stress and improve the conditions
of their lives.
- To educate and encourage recent
Nigerian immigrants to utilize formal mental health
services and
concrete social services to address their
problems.
- To contribute to the improvement
of the conditions of those living in poverty in
Nigeria through
social action, philanthropy, and collaboration
with social
activists.
- To collaborate with other social
workers to address structural inequalities, racism,
and
xenophobia which
impede the adjustment of immigrants to
life in the United States.
- To advance cultural competence
in social work practice with recent immigrants, especially
Africans,
through
education, advocacy, collaboration, networking,
consultation, management, research, and
resource development.
- To encourage Nigerian social workers
and other immigrants to participate
in case studies
and
empirical research
that expand the knowledge base of clinicians
about their culture and immigration
experience, and can contribute
to the development of programs and
treatment approaches that are better suited for their
unique mental health
needs.
